With the emerging progress of the nanotechnology many Australian researchers believe that the DVD capacity can be increased to be 2000-fold with no changes in the size of the disc. Previously, you had to keep dozens of different DVD’s for all your home movies collection but now it is possible to save it on one disc and thanks to the efforts done by researchers from Melbourne's Swinburne University of Technology, this concept happens to advance.

The idea took a more realistic shape due to the new nano-particles study conducted by Australian researchers. The difference is a number of dimensions being present in DVD. Standard DVD has only 3 spatial dimensions whereas the new king sized DVD features two extra dimensions designed to record both data color and polarization and this was made possible by the Swinburne team.

The color dimension was developed by placing nano rods to the surface of the disc and can be used for writing and reading data. Depending on its shape, the nano particles respond to light which makes it possible to record the data in another wavelength but using the same disc location. These super high capacity discs target a completely different audience like military, medical and other services.

The basic principle of operation of polarization dimension allows researchers to record various layers at different angles. But if you see, a regular DVD uses only 0 to 1 percent of volume while the researches demonstrated that using the new high end technology they can extend the storage capacity to 52 layers with future plans of increasing it up to 300 layers.
