In the line of excellent phones, Nokia N85 joins the line. A full connectivity and multimedia phone that is packed with nearly every feature you can think of. The massive OLED screen is a puller along with the sleek design which gives a pretty well upgrade from its previous version. With the coming of Nokia N85, the N series has been given a pretty good boost (of course N95 is not counted in the regular phones).
Lets quickly discuss its key features. They are 2.6" 16M-color OLED display of QVGA resolution, 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and AF assist light, Camera lens cover, Symbian OS 9.3 with S60 3.2 UI, ARM 11 369 MHz CPU, 3G with HSDPA support, Quad-band GSM support, Wi-Fi with UPnP technology, built-in GPS with A-GPS functionality and 3 months of free voice-guided navigation, FM transmitter, Dual slide design with dedicated gaming/audio keys, MicroSD card slot with microSDHC support, 8GB memory card included in the retail package, Built-in accelerometer for UI auto-rotation, 3.5 mm audio jack, TV out, Stereo FM Radio with RDS, Navi wheel navigation, VGA video recording at 30fps, USB and Bluetooth v2.0, One free N-gage game, Keylock switch.
The review is not over unless we talk about its disadvantages, because that's what everybody wants to know. No office document editing out of the box is available. Also it is not the best sunlight phone that means it doesn't give a good screen display under the sun, Camera performance is not so convincing, Wheel navigation performance is also not good and zooming in the camera is very slow.
N85 can be taken as a filler between N70 and N96, however there is much that it delivers than just being a filler. While reviewing we checked the specification sheet of Nokia N85 and we could hardly find something that is missing in it. The OLED screen stands at 2.6" which is one of its attractions. Nokia has delivered excellent quality when compared to N-gage flavor, lookswise as well, and to top everything pricing is less extreme this time. This could be one area where Nokia really worked on.
The closest competitor that Nokia N85 would have is Samsung i7110, although the looks might be different. The samsung i7110 is much similar in specs to Nokia N85 than any other. Designwise N85 is not going to turn any heads, but yes, it does look beautiful and better than others. Lets leave aside the N95 or 96 categories here. The frontal part is covered maximum by the 2.6" screen. The screen is sure a killer with the contrast unmatched with any other TFT display. Keypad space is pretty enough and easy to use.
N85 uses Symbian 9.3 OS with Series60 3rd Edition user interface with feature pack 2 already coming along preinstalled. Other things like layout is quite similar as other Nokia phones. The customization options are extensive in this model. You get to pick from 4 different layout options which are 4 x 3 grid, a simple list, 3D V-shape and Horseshoe layouts.
Reception was not giving any problems when we tested it out. Rather it performed really well. Phone book facility has nearly everything in it and its memory can be expanded to entire phone's memory. The messaging is also wonderful. The intuitive editor helps in making it easy. It has a counter of 160 characters limit. The brackets show the indicator as to how many parts the message is divided into for sending.
One surprise was the Music player in N85. You will hardly find any music file format that this phone doesn't play. Then the Music library is automatically sorted in any order you want. Video also works great with many options to see it in potrait or landscape form. you may even do a full screen to watch it.
Apart from this, there were no connectivity issues faced during the test run. The browser speed is also good enough for internet usage. GPS does okay but could have been improved. Camera is a 5 MP one, but there is nothing good to speak about it. There could have been improvements in this area of handset.
As a whole, Nokia N85 is a well delivered handset that would surely find buyers in the market. At a reasonable price, this handset can make other competitors have tough time in the market.
